HISTORY
OF THE BUTLER GUARDS
The Butler Guards were organized on Feb. 15, 1855.
A volunteer militia unit, it eventually entered the War Between the
States under the command of Colonel Kershaw in a unit which was known as
the Second South Carolina Volunteers.
After the war, they continued to serve in many instances,
including the Darlington Whiskey Rebellion of 1894, the Spanish-American
War (1898), World War I, World War II, and the Korean Conflict.
